Join us to discuss scaling agroforestry in The Finger Lakes. Agroforestry is the practice of incorporating trees and farming. Propagate currently manages 2,400+ acres of agroforestry in New York, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee. We are looking to expand agroforestry practices in New York State. Agroforestry has emerged as a place-based agriculturally-productive climate solution, and we’re looking for community feedback before planting a whole lot more trees. What would you like to see planted? How would you like to see it managed?
FREE to attend. Please RSVP using the sign up below.
Note: There are TWO sessions! Thursday’s is here.
Agenda:
8:00 Welcome, Introductions
8:05 Farm Tour (start walking to stay warm)
- Different agroforestry systems: species, practices
- Potential benefits and negative impacts of trees
8:45 Discussion! Questions on trees
9:00 Funding Agroforestry: How we’ve done that, and how we can fund trees in the future.
9:20 What we’d like from you: Feedback. + How to provide ongoing feedback.
9:30 Open Discussion
10:00 Conclusion
What to bring
1. Warm clothes and shoes suitable for walking in wet grass (for the farm session)
2. Friends, associates, family members, colleagues etc. that are interested in trees on farms.
3. Any snacks, warm beverages, or hydration you might need.
Let us know if you have any questions or need to cancel for any reason.
Economic, Social, and Environmental Impacts:
Positive:
Agroforestry can create 2x as many jobs as grain cropping.
Trees stabilize weather and climate, enhance biodiversity, reduce nutrient runoff into rivers and streams, and mitigate flooding.
Negative:
The tree tubes are made of plastic and fiberglass. Agricultural plastic pollution is an issue on farms, and we are actively exploring biodegradable tree tubes that do the job.
Chestnuts yield 2.6 million calories per acre, enough to feed 2.5-3.2 people. Corn yields roughly 13 million calories per acre, enough to feed 12-15 people.
Contributions to The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
6. Clean Water and Sanitation: Trees uptake 4.5x as much nitrogen and phosphorus as grass.
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth: Agroforestry can generate 2x as many jobs as grain.
13. Climate Action: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and can stabilize weather (create rain).
15. Life on Land: Trees & forests increase biodiversity, reduce flooding, and heal degraded land.
