These trees are the seedlings selected by of one of the largest chestnut operations in the U.S. - Rt. 9 Chestnut Co-op. Empire Elite provide quality yield, quality nut size and excellent nut quality inherited from their parents.

It all starts with select seed from the best performing breeding orchards at the Rt. 9 Chestnut Co-op. These seed come from a select block of trees that includes grafted cultivars and a seedling trial from highly selected parents. They are predominantly pure Chinese with a few Chinese-type hybrids. The resulting offspring are precocious and productive, perhaps more so than many of named cultivar seedlings.
These are then grown out in sandy loam nursery beds in Georgia by our nursery and fulfillment partner, Native Forest Nursery. Bare root trees are removed early winter and held in cold storage where they are then shipped on-demand to your farm!

UMCA® PQK provide exceptional yield and from an early age, stable nut size and excellent quality, and long nut storage time. Additionally, they contain the rare trait of late budbreak for frost avoidance.

Select seedlings of Peach, Qing, and Kohr at the University of Missouri. Peach, Qing, and Kohr have been evaluated in long-term trials at MU, verifying their productivity, nut marketability, and blight resistance - traits which they passed on to their UMCA® PQK offspring.
These are then grown out in sandy loam nursery beds in Missouri & Georgia by our nursery and fulfillment partners, Native Forest Nursery & Bullrock Nursery. Bare root trees are removed early winter and held in cold storage where they are then shipped on-demand to your farm!
